Tonight we went to Costa Vida for dinner with my family. On our way out this man walked past us with a prosthetic leg. Well of course, my inquisitive 3 year old yelled as loud as her little voice possibly could, "Mom, what happened to that guys leg???!!!" So of course in that awkward 2 second moment of silence that feels like 10 minutes, I run every possible answer through my head. So finally I say to her, "Why don't you ask him?" So she did...Luckily he was polite enough to tell her that he had been in a bad motorcycle accident, and that his leg got a really big "owie". She listened with gigantic eyes, and then hopped away saying, "My legs are ok, huh mom." I hope we didn't offend that poor guy, but honestly what is the best way to handle those kinds of situations? I don't want my kids to grow up and look at someone with a disability and stare or point, but at the same time, I don't want them to pry into other peoples personal lives. Any feedback is always helpful!! Thanks!

I think you handled it just right!! There is nothing more innocent than a 3-year-old asking genuine questions, and that guy knew she was just wanting to know where his leg was. I know as our kids get older they'll learn a bit of tact...in the meantime, let's just enjoy their honesty!! ;o)
Way cute story! And way to handle it, Linds! I love you guys! And can't wait to see you on Thursday!
Madison is so cute, that is so funny that she went up and asked him!! I probably would have been really embarrased, and told Gavin to SHHHH!! But I think you handled it very well!!
I don't know what advice to give only because I still ask people why they are missing limbs, or eyeballs, or what not. James is still trying to teach me... ha ha.
That's classic! I think you handled it the only way you could.
Ah... I can't wait for those fun things to start happening to me!
I've never been there, so I don't really know - but good luck! It was so good to see you yesterday! It was fun to Madison - she's even cuter than she is in these pictures. We like you guys a whole lot!
Oh how I can relate to that. I always glare at my children to tell them to stop staring and then TRY to teach them it is never ok to stare..it is always an awkard moment ecspecially with Lilly! I think madison hopping away saying "my legs are ok, huh mom" is pretty great!
